How to draw an owl
Medium
An owl doesn't look like other birds. A huge head, big eyes looking straight ahead. In this lesson we will draw a cute little owl with its wings open, looking a bit sideways.
The dashed line is the wing line in the DrawBird canvas: everything above it flaps, everything below it stays as the body.
Step by step
1. Body
Under the dashed line, draw a plump egg standing slightly upright. An owl's body is rounder than a sparrow's.
2. Head
Add a big circle at the upper right of the body. An owl's head is large compared to its body, and that is where the cuteness comes from.
3. Eyes and beak
Draw two big yellow circles and put black pupils inside. The eyes are at the front of the face, so both are visible. Add a small downward-pointing beak between them.
4. Wing
ABOVE the dashed line, draw a wide wing with a rounded tip going up from the left of the body. An owl's wing is wide and soft. That's why they fly almost silently.
5. Spots and talons
Sprinkle small white spots over the body and head. That's how the little owl's feathers look. Add two small talons underneath and you're done.
Done!
Owl is ready. Now draw it in DrawBird, give it a name and let it loose in the sky.
Common mistakes
- Drawing the eyes small. An owl's eyes take up most of its face.
- Putting the whole head above the line. Keep most of the head below it, or the head will flap along too.
- Making the beak stick out. An owl's beak is short and curved down.
What you should know about Owl
- The most common owl in Türkiye is the little owl. It is only 21–23 cm long.
- Owls can't move their eyes. Instead they can turn their heads about 270 degrees.
- The edges of their wing feathers are like a comb. They break up the air, so there is no sound when they fly.
- The little owl is out in the daytime too. You can spot it on a wall or a roof.
