How to draw a rock dove
Easy
You see pigeons every day, but when it comes to drawing one, you get stuck somewhere. Here is the secret: a plump body and a small head. The shimmer on the neck and the two lines on the wing take care of the rest.
The dashed line is the wing line in the DrawBird canvas: everything above it flaps, everything below it stays as the body.
Step by step
1. Plump body
Draw a full egg below the dashed line and color it blue-gray. A pigeon is plumper than a sparrow, so be generous with the body.
2. Small head
Put a small head at the upper right of the body. The head really is small next to the body. Make the eye orange and draw the beak short and dark.
3. Neck shimmer
Right below the head, on the front of the neck, draw a green stripe and a purple stripe under it. In the sun, a pigeon's neck flashes just like this.
4. Wing and two lines
ABOVE the dashed line, draw a wide wing with a pointed tip. Draw two dark lines across the wing. Do not forget these two lines: they make it look like a city pigeon right away.
5. Tail
Add a tail with a flat tip on the left of the body. Put a dark band at the end of the tail.
Done!
Rock dove is ready. Now draw it in DrawBird, give it a name and let it loose in the sky.
Common mistakes
- Drawing the head too big. A pigeon's head is small next to its body.
- Drawing the body thin. A pigeon is a plump bird.
- Skipping the two dark lines on the wing. Without them it turns into an ordinary gray bird.
What you should know about Rock dove
- City pigeons come from the rock dove. They use buildings like cliffs.
- They feed their chicks with "pigeon milk", which they make in their crop. Both the mother and the father do this.
- Most birds scoop water into the beak and tip the head back to swallow. A pigeon sucks the water up, like drinking through a straw.
- Homing pigeons can find their way back to the nest from hundreds of kilometers away.
