How to draw a duck
Easy
The best-known bird of the lake is the mallard. It's a joy to draw, with its flat beak and green head. A flying duck stretches its neck forward and flaps fast.
The dashed line is the wing line in the DrawBird canvas: everything above it flaps, everything below it stays as the body.
Step by step
1. Body
Under the dashed line, draw a plump, horizontal body. A duck is a heavy bird, so make it fuller than the sparrow.
2. Neck and head
From the right of the body, add a short, thick neck with a round head on the end. The male mallard's head is bright green.
3. Flat beak
In front of the head, draw a long, flat, yellow beak with a rounded tip. A duck's beak isn't pointed. It's like a spoon.
4. Wing
ABOVE the dashed line, draw a wide wing. In the middle, put the bright blue patch ducks have, called the "speculum".
5. Details
Add a thin white ring around the neck and brown on the chest. Draw the tail short and pointed.
Done!
Duck is ready. Now draw it in DrawBird, give it a name and let it loose in the sky.
Common mistakes
- Drawing the beak pointed. A duck's beak is flat with a rounded tip.
- Making the neck long. A duck's neck is short. It's not a swan.
- Forgetting the blue speculum. That blue patch on the wing gives away a duck right away.
What you should know about Duck
- The mallard is the ancestor of almost all domestic ducks.
- The male has a green head, the female is speckled brown.
- They feed by sticking their tails up in the air and putting their heads in the water.
- Bread isn't good for ducks. Corn, peas or duck feed are better.
