European goldfinch

Carduelis carduelis

A tiny, chirpy bird with a red face and a bright yellow band on its wing. In my opinion one of the most colorful songbirds of Türkiye.

Where to see itGardens, field edges, parks; all year

It has a red mask on its face, with black and white bands on its head. The wings are black with a wide yellow stripe. In flight this yellow flashes.

Its beak is thin and pointed. That's perfect for pulling seeds out of prickly plants like thistles. If you leave some thistles or sunflowers in your garden, goldfinches will come.

Because of their cheerful song, they have been kept in cages for centuries. But know this: in Türkiye, it is forbidden to catch goldfinches and other wild songbirds from the wild.

In winter they move around in flocks. They are often in mixed groups with finches and other small birds.

To draw it in DrawBird

Follow the sparrow lesson, but draw it small and delicate. Put a red patch on the face, black-and-white bands on the head, and a wide yellow line on the wing. Make the beak pointed and light-colored.
