Erithacus rubecula

A small bird with an orange chest that hops a step or two away and waits for worms while you dig in the garden. Its courage will surprise you.

Where to see itForests, parks, gardens; more common in winter

The face and chest are orange-red, the back olive brown, the belly whitish. Males and females look almost the same.

The robin sings in winter too. Both males and females defend their own winter territory. If you hear a thin, slightly sad song from the garden on a cold morning, it's most likely a robin.

It's very attached to its territory. It has even been seen trying to chase off another robin, or just a clump of red feathers. Small but quarrelsome.

In winter, numbers in Türkiye go up with the birds arriving from the north. If you plant berry bushes like dog rose and hawthorn in your garden, they will find food all winter.
